Do you have an anime that you liked but just never finished it, but you absolutely do plan to come back to it, you swear?

What's the longest you've left an anime unfinished? What's the anime?

Why won't you finish it?

Most of the shows in my On-Hold list are shows that I have lukewarm feelings about but don't want to throw them in the Dropped bin (yet). But there are a few shows that I just can't bring myself to actually get back to, for reasons I don't quite understand.

I love Natsume Yuujinchou, but I'm "saving that for a rainy day" because I don't want to burn through them too quickly. I have been enjoying Frieren and Dungeon Meshi, but I don't feel like finishing it, which makes me think maybe I didn't like them as much as I thought I did.

One dumb reason I have is that I often let my Netflix subscription expire, because that stuff is expensive and I always regret not watching enough. So I'm often left with a bunch of shows on pause, like Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Pluto. And when I re-sub after some time, some other movies/shows draw my attention.

yeah I've got a few like that... I dropped claymore so many years ago I can't even remember why, even though I gave it a 7. I still consider picking it up. the ones I like on hold, but am also waiting for the right mood, are:

katanagatari
nichijou
ousama ranking
vinland saga
bleach (which I've had on hold for a decade even though I like it??)

at some point I think I just have to force myself back into it. I do like em but I never know why I put them on pause.

can't yuck my yum

There are times I like an anime so much, that I don't want to finish it because when I do I won't be able to watch (anything new) it any more.

Happening right now with Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card-hen. I started almost a year ago, and I haven't even gotten halfway through it.

Watching this show gives me a wave of nostalgia from watching the original series, so I wanted to watch it as similarly as how I watched the original back then: watching only one episode a day on TV.

Setting it up on TV is not hard at all, but I just need extra motivation to do that since it's easier to just watch on my phone, so I end up watching something else instead when I feel like watching something - a show I don't mind watching on my phone. I also prioritize watching ongoing shows, so it makes completed shows like CCS: Clear Card-hen becoming more set aside.

I sometimes broke my "rules" and ended up watching more than 1 episode in one go, but I still do not want to binge it since the show is very episodic, so it's still not progressing much.

Anyways, this thread makes me want to watch the show - lemme just start at least 1 episode right now lol.

I do finish them. But I do so on my time. Which is usually when I get tired of other things and feel like going back to anime. If it takes me a year to finish one show, that's my business.

Even though it seems very contradictory, this experience is pretty relatable.

For instance, I've taken around 5 breaks while catching up to One Piece, each being anywhere between 1-6 months long in duration. Part of the reason for these breaks is that I watch it in spurts, so I put it on hold when I got busy. But those breaks, which were meant to last <1 month, almost always lasted longer than I would have wanted even though I liked it a lot. I think it has something to do with the momentum/mood because it was really easy to get back into it with a few episodes.

There's also Dangers in my Heart S2, which I put on hold during the middle of the season. I didn't really intend to put it on hold, but I just never got into the mood to watch the next episode even though I knew that I would enjoy it similarly to each of the previous episodes. I suppose in this case, the main couple already went past the phase in their relationship that I was most interested in, so it no longer had the same draw for me as before. If I had watched it after the season finished airing tho, I would've likely finished it easily, but the waiting between weeks made me lose motivation for it. I think I experience similar issues for Slice-of-Life anime which they typically make up for with unexpected twists/surprises.

I usually finish a season but completing the whole series is a different thing.
One example is Gintama. I absolutely love it. I am just waiting for a vacation or some holidays to continue with the second season

If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

I dropped Serial Experiments Lain like 4 times before finally completing it and loving it. It depends on a lot of things, actually :)

  • Sometimes I’m just not in the right headspace for a show, especially if it’s something deep or abstract like Serial Experiments Lain. I need to be in the mood to really get into it, and if I’m not, I’ll drop it. Later, when I’m more into that kind of vibe, it finally clicks.

  • I might like a show, but life gets in the way—whether it’s work, or other hobbies. Sometimes I get distracted by something else, and the show just falls off my radar. When things settle down, I’ll pick it back up and realize how much I was enjoying it.

  • Sometimes I’m just not ready to appreciate a show because of where I am in life, or I don’t fully get the themes. After a break or some time passes, I come back to it, and suddenly everything makes sense—I end up loving it.

That's me with the original Trigun. I did enjoy it, but I started watching it at a weird time. Definitely plan on going back and finishing it at some point.
(This was also the first anime I tried to watch in dub. Personal foul on my part, I just don't enjoy dubs as much as subs.)

not in the same mindspace to enjoy it and/or no time to binge it at once. i've left steins gate for this reason. when i started it it was during my winter vacation last year. my vacation was over when i reached episode 13. never touched it again and have forgotten almost everything. waiting for my next vacation. if i get in the correct mndspace and mood then will binge it fully.

If I started an anime but didn’t finish, it’s probably cz I got sidetracked by something else like another show, book, or just life stuff. Sometimes, if Im really into something, I kinda avoid finishing it cz I dont wanna say goodbye to the story or the characters I got attached to.

more or less the same here, but it's usually a fansub release I follow as they're either stopped or stalled for whatever reason. I do finish them eventually.

ive been waiting for someone to ask this

demon king daimao. i watched this shi time ago, when i was watching anime on youtube.
one of my starter harem anime alongside rasario vampire. but yea i only have it on hold because i didnt want it to end. over the years, its gotten easier to move on after finishing an anime, but back then, that shit was tough for me - especially since i didnt know what anime to watch right after, unlike how i do today.

so yeah i definitely plan to watch that last episode one of these days.

as for my other on-hold anime 😬😬 looking kinda iffy
ranma is also getting a remake or smth

Meitantei Conan is still ongoing, so... even if I continued it would be no use. Might as well wait until there are more episodes.
Though, at this point I might rewatch from the beginning again. Wouldn't be the first time in the past 28 years that this anime has been ongoing.

Also, since they fired Kamiya Akira from voicing Kogorou Mouri I lost a lot of motivation to keep watching.

I stopped watching Yuri Kuma Arashi while it was airing, I don't remember why exactly. I did enjoy the show, it might have been because I was reading the manga at the same time and didn't want to be spoiled (Though as I understand now, the manga and show are quite different) Regardless, it's been a decade now and I've long since forgotten which episode I was on when I stopped watching which has impacted my decision to pick it back up.

Currently, I have Black Clover and Code Geass on hold.

Black Clover has been on hold since 2021 or 2022. It was interesting but there were more interesting shows at the time. I'll watch it after I catch up with One Piece.

As for Code Geass, I'm not sure why I put it on hold or why I haven't continued watching it. It's been on hold since early 2023. Who knows how long it'll stay there? I intend to watch it at some point, though. If I don't watch it this year, I might as well drop it.

Both shows have been on hold before I created my MAL account.

I like Hyouge Mono, but I was never in the mood for it. When the process dragged out for years and year I decided to officially drop it.

Also I waited for too long the fansub of Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae to come out of hiatus...but I have different plans for it.
I intend to finish it raw.

no reason in particular, sometimes i just wait for the good timing -a.k.a having a very good food for a very good series lmao-

however, most of the shows left on hold for me due to not being that very exiting or because they have a lot of episodes, i don't watch long animes usually.
i tend to watch 12 ep animes most of the time for that reason, some colleagues of mine were making fun of me for only watching 12 ep animes.....

Don't get me wrong, I like it, although I don't wanna sit through 1000+ episodes. I do not have that much time on my hands neither.

The longest anime I have on hold is Black clover, it has been around a year and a half. I don't plan on continuing yet, I want to watch all the anime that I have been holding off for months.

I can relate to all of you.
I was a child whose favorite food was always left on the plate until the last minute.
There are those who read manga following the series weekly and those who like to read them after they are compiled in book form. Of course, I'm the latter.

There are a lot of titles on my watching list. If I had to pick one, it would be the «PSYCO-PASS» series after the second one, including the movie version. People say that it is not as good as the first series, but I would still like to come to its end.
The most recent one is «Spice and Wolf». I was fond of the first adaptation, so I have high hopes and skepticism. I haven't touched the new one because I wanted to binge-watch it after it's completed.

By contrast, I'm about to retire from the «Toaru» series.
It's getting harder for me to keep up with those who are overpowered students based on light novels.

If I dropped a series, I did not like it enough to continue. No amount of high mal scores can make me enjoy something I dislike such as Wolf Children or Hyouka. The older a I get, the more I realize consuming media for feedback like mal or metacritic is a mistake.
Also after I got a job I started prioritizing spending my freetime I stuff I like and avoid clearing anime and games out of a warped desire for completion.

I really don't. Stuff in watching list I watch - if something is on little break it's because of the fact I still have to end summer season. Stuff on-hold - there are only 2 titles finished there (and they are not anime - it's donghua), not progressed further because of lack of proper english translation (machine translation = unwatchable garbage)

This is literally me. I'm very mood-based and feel like I need to be in the right headspace to enjoy something to the fullest. Often I am kicking myself for not starting a show sooner as I end up really liking it, but I think being in the right mood actually helps.
